Blade Expertise: Unraveling the CPM-3V Steel of the Bradford Knives Guardian 5.5

No discussion of the Bradford Knives Guardian 5.5 is complete without delving into the exceptional CPM-3V steel that forms the backbone of its blade. This steel isn't just a material; it's a testament to the marriage of science and craftsmanship, providing a unique blend of qualities that set it apart in the realm of tool steels.

CPM-3V Steel Overview:

Chemical Composition Magic: Crucible CPM 3V is not your ordinary steel; it's a tool steel made from metal powders with a chemical composition that reads like a recipe for excellence. The unique combination of properties stems from its high impact strength, good wear resistance, and a touch of chromium for corrosion resistance.

Fine Grain, Small Carbides, and Purity: What sets CPM 3V apart is the trifecta of fine grain size, small carbides, and excellent purity in its powder metallurgy (PM) microstructure. These factors contribute to heightened toughness, making it a go-to choice for applications demanding resilience in the face of demanding conditions.

Hard but Ductile: At its core, CPM 3V is undeniably hard but surprises with better ductility than most tool steel grades. With abrasion resistance approximately 50% better than D-2, it strikes a delicate balance, holding a cutting edge exceptionally well while remaining relatively easy to process and sharpen.

Wear Resistance Marvel: CPM 3V proudly wears the crown for one of the hardest tool steels available, particularly noted for its outstanding wear resistance. While there might be harder steels, none can boast the same level of wear resistance, making it a compelling choice for those who demand durability without compromise.

Performance in the Field:

Durability Dynamo: The exceptional strength of CPM 3V makes it a stalwart companion in the field, assuring users of survival under heavy use. Resistant to chipping and breakage even under the influence of impact or twisting, it becomes the steel of choice for camping and outdoor enthusiasts navigating the challenges of the forest.

Edge Retention and Wear Resistance Dance: While not holding edges as tenaciously as some steels like S35VN or S30V, CPM 3V showcases superior edge retention compared to counterparts like D2. The heat treatment sweet spot of 58-60 RC ensures a balance between strength and edge retention, providing users with a blade that stands up to repeated use.

Corrosion Resistance Realism: Let's be clear – CPM 3V is not stainless. Care is paramount to prevent oxidation, and even with proper maintenance, a patina of discoloration or oxidation can be expected over time. It's a trade-off for the impressive strength and wear resistance it brings to the table.

Heat Treatment Insights:

Balancing Act: The heat treatment process, falling within the 58-60 RC range according to Crucible, dictates the delicate equilibrium between edge retention and strength. Less hardness in heat treatment offers more strength but sacrifices some edge retention – a compromise that knife manufacturers navigate based on the intended use of the blade.

In conclusion, the Bradford Knives Guardian 5.5's CPM-3V steel isn't just a blade; it's a meticulous fusion of science, artistry, and functionality. From the forest to survival scenarios, this steel weaves a narrative of durability, wear resistance, and the delicate dance between hardness and ductility – making it an indispensable companion for those who demand the best in their outdoor pursuits.

Sharpening an Emerson Super Commander

Emerson Super Commander Pt2 - Finishing the work Knife came in severely chipped. We had to start with 100grit diamond stones to remove material and get rid of the chips/nicks in the blade. This video picks up from 200grit diamond and takes you through completion at 4mu/2mu strops. Paper cutting test at the end to prove its sharp. Knife was sharpened using a Wicked Edge sharpening system.

Benchmade Mini-Infidel - Service, Repair & Sharpening

Check out this video for the work we did on a client’s Benchmade Mini-Infidel. These knives are known for having issues deploying when they are dirty. We completely disassembled the knife, cleaned it up and put it back in working order. We also repaired the blade tip and sharpened it to a mirror polish.
